Dollar moves higher against yen, but keeps running into resistance
The dollar was moderately higher against the yen in rangebound Asian trade on Thursday, with investors sitting on the sidelines amid a lack of fresh trading cues.
The U.S. currency USDJPY, +0.37% was changing hands at ¥108.93, compared with ¥108.40 late Wednesday in New York.
After falling to its fresh 18-month low of ¥105.55 set on May 3, the dollar gained traction against the yen in recent trade, hitting as high as ¥109.38 Wednesday, on Tokyo’s repeated verbal warnings against the Japanese currency’s strength. But the greenback is struggling to go further upside as it is weighed down by selling on recovery.
“The dollar has come back to ¥109 from ¥105. But it’s just back to where it was three weeks ago before expectations for the Bank of Japan’s extra stimulus mounted,” said Minori Uchida, head of Tokyo global markets research at Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi UFJ. “There is no fresh trading cues to bring the dollar higher toward ¥110.”
Uchida said the yen is under upward pressure amid the market participants’ lack of faith in the BOJ’s monetary policy and given Japan’s increasing current account surplus.
With regard to the dollar, the Federal Reserve will likely remain slow to raise rates this year, weakening upside momentum of the dollar. Amid consumer data still lacking vigor in the first quarter of this year, “even assuming strong consumption figures tomorrow, that may not immediately signal the U.S. economic strength and rate increase,” said Uchida, in reference to the U.S. April retail sales scheduled to come out Friday.
Investors showed muted reaction to BOJ Gov. Haruhiko Kuroda’s remarks in parliament on Thursday.
Kuroda said the central bank’s current monetary policy, consisting of negative interest rates and asset purchases, is “appropriate” even though it has been unable to achieve its inflation target.
He also reiterated that the central bank will choose from options in its arsenal that include quantitative and qualitative measures, and interest rates if the need for additional easing arises.
In other currency-pair trading, the euro EURUSD, -0.1663% was at $1.1422, compared with $1.1426. The common currency EURJPY, +0.20% was at ¥124.23 from ¥123.92.
The WSJ Dollar Index BUXX, +0.28% a measure of the dollar against a basket of major currencies, was up 0.11% at 86.33.
